The portfolio manager whisperers

AdvertisementHistorically, a hedge fund's chief investment office or senior portfolio manager was responsible for vetting and wooing key investment hires. They can also help hedge funds save on outside recruiting costs, which can add up to tens of millions a year. Hedge funds targeted institutional salespeople at investment banks with exposure to hedge funds, as well as asset allocators with chops in portfolio-manager selection and due diligence. Assets at multimanager hedge funds have boomed since 2018. The principle may work for fictional baseball diamonds, but the reality at hedge funds is more complicated.

Bill Gross says bond prices will be higher rather than lower in the near term as Treasury issuance surges. Gross also said the "total return" bond strategy he helped develop in the 1980s is dead. AdvertisementThe high level of US debt issuance signals to investors that they should expect yields to move higher, not lower, according to "bond king" Bill Gross. AdvertisementGross explained that while Treasury debt has been growing at a rapid rate, other types of debt, including business and household debt, have been growing more slowly. As a result, in order to make up for this difference, the government must ramp up Treasury debt by over 10% to uphold 5.5% nominal GDP growth, he wrote.

With its decision to hold the line on rates, the committee in its post-meeting statement noted a "lack of further progress" in getting inflation back down to its 2% target. The process has resulted in the central bank balance sheet to come down to about $7.4 trillion, or $1.5 trillion less than its peak around mid-2022. Under the new plan, the Fed will reduce the monthly cap on Treasurys to $25 billion from $60 billion. The reduction of the balance sheet roll-off, then, can be seen as a slight easing measure. The Fed uses interest rates to control the flow of money, with the intent that higher rates will dampen demand and thus help reduce prices.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen attends a press conference at US Ambassador's residence in Beijing on April 8, 2024. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is preparing new sanctions on Iran after the country launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel over the weekend. "The attack by Iran and its proxies underscores the importance of Treasury's work to use our economic tools to counter Iran's malign activity." Israel said it intercepted 99% of the more than 300 projectiles from Iran. The U.S. has imposed hundreds of sanctions on Iran and its proxies in recent years for their connections to terrorism and for the country's missile program.

“It is important that we maintain strong American steel companies powered by American steelworkers,” he said. “US Steel has been an iconic American steel company for more than a century, and it is vital for it to remain an American steel company that is domestically owned and operated.”Experts said opposition from Biden and other politicians — both Republican and Democrats — make it unlikely the deal will win approval. “Six weeks ago, the United States gave Mitsui, a Japanese company, a $20 billion deal to build a crane factory here in the United States and replace all our port cranes throughout the United States. “If the administration has concerns about the Nippon Steel deal, it must seriously consider alternative outcomes. JPMorgan Chase CEO and Chairman Jamie Dimon gestures as he speaks during the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee oversight hearing on Wall Street firms, on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., December 6, 2023. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned Friday that multiple challenges, primarily inflation and war, threaten an otherwise positive economic backdrop. "Many economic indicators continue to be favorable," the head of the the largest U.S. bank by assets said in announcing first-quarter earnings results. An "unsettling" global landscape including "terrible wars and violence" is one such factor introducing uncertainty both into JPMorgan's business and the broader economy, Dimon said. However, the bank warned net interest income for this year could be slightly below what Wall Street is expecting and shares were off nearly 2% in premarket trading.

Market chaos could come next year if the US doesn't adjust its fiscal path, Joao Gomes told CNBC. The US can't afford to extend tax cuts next year, he said. If it doesn't adjust its fiscal trajectory soon, 2025 could be the year when markets start to roil, Wharton professor Joao Gomes warned. "That's something that could definitely happen to us next year," Gomes told CNBC on Thursday. "I think we'll have a serious debate next year about the tax cuts and whether to extend them or not," he said.

The US government's ballooning interest payments are eating a hole in its budget, they said. "We are headed toward record spending levels, record deficit levels, record debt levels, record interest payments — the list goes and on," Maya MacGuineas, the president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, told Fox Business this week. While the US isn't at imminent risk of that kind of chaos, bond markets could "snap back" if the government's interest payments soar to $1 trillion in 2026 as expected, Swagel said. AdvertisementHowever, she noted that some experts on Wall Street were "incredibly worried" about the national debt and interest payments. DoubleLine Capital CEO Jeffrey Gundlach has also sounded the alarm on debt payments.

The Federal Reserve will cut interest rates just 3 times in 2024, according to Goldman Sachs. The bank lowered its forecast for 4 interest rate cuts after elevated inflation data. AdvertisementHigher-than-expected inflation readings over the past two months have led Goldman Sachs to revise its 2024 interest rate forecasts. The bank now expects the Federal Reserve to deliver just three 25-basis point interest rate cuts this year, down from its prior projection of four rate cuts. Three interest rate cuts in 2024 is about half of what the market originally expected at the beginning of the year.

Dajabon, Dominican Republic CNN —The United States and other diplomatic missions have begun evacuating personnel from Haiti, as gang violence in the Caribbean nation’s capital Port-au-Prince continues to spiral. US Southern Command said the move was consistent with “standard practice for Embassy security augmentation worldwide.” No Haitians were on board the military aircraft, it added. Another source with knowledge of the operations told CNN there have been at least 12 helicopter evacuation flights into Port-au-Prince over the past three days, all evacuating diplomatic and humanitarian staff. However, shots fired nearby after the last flight’s take off on Sunday have called into question the viability of continuing the evacuation flights, the source said. The World Food Programme suspended its maritime transport services in Port-au-Prince from distributing aid across Haiti due to the instability.

AI is Uncle Sam’s new secret weapon to fight fraud

Starting around late 2022, the Treasury Department began using enhanced fraud-detection methods powered by AI to spot fraud, CNN has learned. Treasury’s AI-powered fraud detection recovered $375 million in fiscal 2023 alone, Treasury officials tell CNN, marking the first time Treasury is publicly acknowledging it is using AI to detect fraud. Instead, Treasury officials say the type of AI they are using falls more into the bucket of machine learning and Big Data. The goal is to move with such speed that anomalies are flagged and banks are alerted before fraudulent checks are ever cashed, Treasury officials said. Catching fraud in millisecondsAmiram Shachar, co-founder and CEO of cloud security startup Upwind, told CNN the federal government should “absolutely” use AI to detect fraud.

Berkshire is making bank on bonds, and its $168 billion cash pile is worth more than Uber or Nike. Berkshire's $1 trillion-plus of assets included $354 billion of stocks, $178 billion of property and equipment, $130 billion of Treasury bills, and $24 billion of inventories. That figure is larger than the value of General Electric ($167 billion), Comcast ($166 billion), Uber ($162 billion), Nike ($160 billion), Walmart ($159 billion), American Express ($156 billion), or Pfizer ($155 billion). The upshot is that on December 31, Berkshire held $354 billion of stocks, and $168 billion of cash and other short-term investments — a ratio of nearly 2:1.

The Biden administration is dispatching a high-level delegation of Treasury Department officials to Beijing this week for a round of economic talks as the world’s largest economies look to continue engagement efforts that President Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, agreed to pursue last year. A Treasury official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the trip has not been publicly announced, said that the two days of meetings would include “frank conversations” about China’s use of nonmarket economic practices like government subsidies. The U.S. officials also plan to discuss concerns about industrial overcapacity, which could flood international markets with cheap products. More broadly, the two governments will discuss the macroeconomic outlooks for their countries, whose economies are critical to the health of the overall global economy. The United States is proving to be the most resilient economy in the world.

At a Zillow-sponsored event in October, he said that the Fed's sway on mortgage rates was overstated. Divounguy: Mortgage rates tend to follow the 10-year Treasury yield. We also know that very often there's a spread between mortgage rates and the yield on the 10-year. So a decrease in the Fed policy rate may not cause mortgage rates to decrease that much further. Let's say I have the money for a house, and I expect mortgage rates to come down eventually, if not much this year.

More importantly, though was Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's pushback against the idea that rate cuts are imminent. So, what does this mean for the housing market, which is eagerly anticipating lower rates to make housing even slightly more affordable? According to Redfin, pushing out timelines for Fed rate cuts means mortgage rates are likely to remain elevated for longer this year, but it doesn't mean relief is off the table for homebuyers in 2024. "Regardless of any short-term volatility in mortgage rates, we expect rates to come down gradually throughout the year," Redfin's Chen Zhao wrote following the Fed meeting. But I believe seeing where we are today vindicates the approach we took,” Yellen said in the prepared remarks. As President Joe Biden seeks reelection, he is trying to convince voters who are gloomy about the economy that inflation is under control and the economy is strong. An October AP-NORC poll stated that roughly three-quarters of Americans described the nation’s economy as poor. At the mayors' conference, Yellen planned to say the Biden administration's COVID-19 spending benefited states and local governments — and that had the administration’s response been smaller the U.S. economy could be worse off. Cyclical industries such as manufacturing often drive profit cycles. That makes a comedown for the U.S. economy seem less likely. The Commerce Department on Wednesday reported that before-tax corporate profits rose 1.1% from a year earlier in the third quarter. This compares with a decline of 6% in the second quarter. Exclude the Fed, and corporate profits rose by 6.7% in the third quarter compared with a gain of 1.6% in the second.

CNN —North Korea has warned any potential interference or attack on its “space assets” by the United States will be “deemed a declaration of war,” the state media outlet KCNA reported on Saturday. DPRK stands for Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea. Neither South Korea, the United States nor Japan, all of which are experiencing increasing military tensions with North Korea, could confirm “Malligyong-1,” had made it into orbit. The November launch was condemned by North Korea’s neighbors Japan and South Korea, with Seoul calling it a “clear violation” of a UN Security Council resolution that prohibits North Korea from using ballistic missile technology. North Korea subsequently vowed to deploy new military hardware along the military demarcation line.
